Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) with lung diseases often require mechanical ventilation and supportive care. Effective therapy hinges on accurate diagnosis and continuous monitoring of lung conditions. Traditional assessment methods, such as blood gas analysis (BGA) and radiological technologies, are crucial but have limitations. BGA provides only a general overview of the patient's health, while CT scans pose radiation risks and are not always available at the bedside. A promising alternative is electrical impedance tomography (EIT), which involves injecting harmless currents and measuring the resulting voltages on the thorax surface. This non-invasive technology allows for continuous bedside monitoring. This work presents several advancements in multi-frequency EIT (mfEIT) for lung disease monitoring, including the development of a new mfEIT system, innovative imaging methods, and indices, as well as evaluations of EIT technology across various lung pathologies. Animal trials focused on detecting fluid content in the lungs, monitoring lung contusion, and assessing lung conditions related to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
