Rachel Krall, the true crime podcaster from Megan Goldin’s acclaimed Night Swim, returns to investigate the disappearance of a popular social media influencer, Maddison Logan, who vanished after visiting Terence Bailey, a suspected serial killer soon to be released from prison. Bailey has long been linked to the murders of six women, and Maddison's visit raises immediate concerns when she disappears just hours later. The police suspect foul play, and the investigation stalls, prompting the FBI to enlist Rachel's expertise in locating Maddison. Maddison's online presence is striking, yet she appears to have no real-life connections, complicating the search. To uncover the truth, Rachel creates a fake Instagram account and infiltrates BuzzCon, an influencer conference, where she uncovers a cutthroat atmosphere that may have turned deadly. As the investigation progresses, police discover a woman's body adorned with a snake tattoo, leading the FBI to consider a chilling theory: Bailey may have an accomplice and a dangerous obsession with influencers, including Rachel herself.
