Truth Will Prevail

Meer over het boek

From Czechoslovakia, a country which knew a brief springtime of freedom in the early months of this year, and which is now occupied by foreign troops and subject to decisions taken in Moscow, comes this story of personal courage and faith.Marian Slingova tells of her sudden and inexplicable arrest in the winter of 1951, the accusations of treachery levelled against her husband (a high party official), the farce of the Slansky and Sling trials (in which it will be remembered that Konni Zilliacus and Claud Cockburn figured as imperialist agents), and of two-and-a-half years of imprisonment entirely cut off from the outside world. After her husband's execution came release and exile to the remote countryside, where she and her sons lived under an assumed name, shunned by their former friends. There followed a prolonged and courageous campaign to clear Otto Sling's name of the charges brought against him. The story merges with with the public events of this year, for the belated admissions and revelations concerning the trials began to implicate the Russians. The last chapter of the book is - literally - broken off by the appearance of Russian tanks.
