The 1866 edition is not indexed or illustrated. Amidst a happy, pleasant scene, I pondered the daily life at the secluded mill, allowing for a touch of sentimentality as a traveler welcomed by kind friends. The romantic setting made me ravenously hungry, as bread, wine, and Beethoven are insufficient sustenance for a forty-mile row in the sun. An hour later, spotting an auberge by the water, I suppressed my emotions and ordered an omelette and two chops. The table was set under a shady pear tree by the water, with my boat resting gently on the ripples at my feet. This sunny hour of well-deserved rest, enhanced by fresh grapes and a pear, was slightly marred by the thought that the miller's sister might someday learn how I had consoled my lacerated heart. Afterward, I continued my journey, gliding past shady trees, towering rocks, nimble rapids, and through orchards and vineyards, enjoying constant varied pleasures. The hills ahead indicated that other rivers would join the Reuss, which flowed like the Thames at Putney. Soon, the Limmat entered from one side, and the Aar from the other, the latter giving its name to all three rivers, despite not being the largest. This Aar is the "old original bar," cherished by Swiss travelers.
