Meer over het boek

With more than 110 full-color photographs. Portugal is small in size, yet it is larger than life. Contained within 34,332 square miles, Portugal boasts a people who are warm and welcoming, a climate that is temperate, and some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. Although Portugal's history is linked to Spain's, a country with which it shares the Iberian Peninsula, it differs markedly from its neighbor in topography, architecture, language, traditions, and cuisine. Unified within its current boundaries for more than 700 years, Portugal has had more time than any other European country to develop an individual character. But Portugal's history stretches back much farther. There is evidence that people inhabited this southwestern corner of Europe as early as 8000 B.C. Since that time, myriad peoples, including the Phoenicians, the Romans, and the Moors, have swept through Portugal. Aspects of these cultures survive today in the Portuguese language, which is derived from Latin, and in the Moorish-influenced architecture in the south. Front and Back cover by Mauricio Abreu/The Image Bank. Jacket concept by Lesley Ehlers. Jacket design by Ann-Louise Lipman. (from jacket)
