The Academy's Democracy project, led by Professor Dr. Hans F. Zacher, has reached its final phase. The project began with workshops and plenary meetings where members and invited experts presented and discussed various papers. It became clear that to fulfill its responsibility of providing the Church with valuable information and innovative ideas, the Academy needed to go beyond merely conducting and publishing academic lectures and debates. After several meetings focused on democracy, the gathered material was evaluated by external experts who reported their findings to the Academy and engaged in discussions with its members. Following this review, a report was prepared to summarize the knowledge derived from social sciences that could aid the Church in developing its social teaching. This report was submitted by Professor Zacher to the Academicians for feedback and received final approval at the May 2004 Plenary Meeting. With the publication of this report, along with all prior discussions on democracy, the Academy's initial project is now complete. Mary Ann Glendon President October 2004
