Mitch Berger, a young and successful film critic, has withdrawn into solitude following his wife's death a year ago, spending his days in his apartment or screening rooms. Concerned for his well-being, his editor and friend assigns him a non-film piece about the affluent homeowners of Connecticut's Gold Coast, hoping it will lift his spirits. Reluctantly, Mitch agrees and finds a rental cottage on the exclusive Big Sister island, where he meets his friendly landlady, Dolly. However, some locals, who view Mitch's humble background with disdain, are less welcoming. Despite this, Dolly, needing the income after her husband left, remains gracious. During a gardening session, Mitch stumbles upon a body in Dolly's yard, leading to the involvement of Lieutenant Desiree Mitry, a dedicated officer on the Connecticut State Police major crimes squad. As the youngest and only black female officer in her unit, Desiree is both formidable and intriguing, capturing Mitch's attention with her artistic side and complex personality.
