Set in a Chilean city, this brief novel has as its protagonists three women living together under one roof: the mother, Lady Alina, and her two single daughters, Carmen and Ignacia Teresa. Although the women are living very comfortably when the story begins, they soon fall into poverty, a fact that the mother tries to keep a secret and that the daughters find tremendously hard to accept. Two worlds are juxtaposed in this book: the one outside the house, filled with dances, jewels, and gallant suitors, and the austere and difficult one inside the house, where the memory of their lost affluence is a constant presence. Ambientada en una ciudad de Chile, esta breve novela tiene como protagonistas a tres mujeres viviendo juntas en una casa: la madre, Doña Alina, y sus dos hijas solteras, Carmen e Ignacia Teresa. Al comienzo de la narración, las tres mujeres viven en una situación económicamente acomodada, pero más tarde caen en una pobreza que la madre intenta ocultar, y a la que las hijas no se pueden resignar. Se contraponen en este libro dos mundos: el de afuera de la casa que está poblado de bailes, joyas y hombres que las invitan a salir, y el austero y difícil de adentro, en el cual siempre está presente el recuerdo de su abundancia perdida.
