The title references the Latin phrase "Quo vadis Domine," which translates to "Where are you going, Lord?" This phrase is linked to the apocryphal Acts of Peter, where Peter encounters Jesus while fleeing Rome. The novel explores themes of faith and sacrifice, as Peter returns to accept martyrdom after his encounter. Henryk Sienkiewicz, who extensively researched the Roman Empire to ensure historical accuracy, incorporates several historical figures into the narrative. The novel, published in installments in Polish dailies in 1895 and as a book in 1896, conveys a strong pro-Christian message and has been translated into over 50 languages. It played a significant role in Sienkiewicz receiving the Nobel Prize for literature in 1905. The story has inspired multiple film adaptations, including notable versions in 1912, 1924, and a Hollywood film in 1951, as well as a 2001 adaptation by Jerzy Kawalerowicz.
