This modern and easy–to–understand textbook offers a conceptually and mathematically precise introduction to the basics of classical field theory. It is addressed to students of physics, mathematics and related sciences from the fourth semester on. An excellent introductory textbook for courses on electrodynamics and classical field theory, it is the result of many years of lecturing by the authors at the University of Freiburg, FRG. The book focuses on electrodynamics and special relativity theory. A separate chapter treats hydrodynamics as a particularly striking example of classical field theory.
