What varied images, how many different associations this blunt word evokes in many people. Crete is an island of sunshine and beaches, and thus a place for escaping history, past and present. Crete is a land of rugged mountains and trails and caves, a natural preserve to walk about and explore. There is the Crete of medieval Christian chapels, for instance, with fine old Byzantine frescoes and icons. There is a Crete rich in dances and music and folklore and traditional festivities.
