Meer over het boek

Charles Edward Montague was born in London on New Year's Day, 1867, and educated at the City of London School and Balliol College, Oxford. A passionate writer, he contributed literary reviews to the Manchester Guardian, where he was later invited to work. Alongside editor C. P. Scott, he transformed the newspaper into a vibrant platform advocating for Irish Home Rule and opposing the Boer War and the First World War. However, with the onset of war, Montague felt it crucial to support the British government. At 47, he enlisted, quickly rising to the rank of second lieutenant and transferring to Military Intelligence. The war prompted a crisis in his faith, which he set aside to continue serving. After the war ended in November 1918, Montague returned to his family and the Manchester Guardian, where he worked until his retirement in 1925. The war, though corrosive, provided him with rich material for writing. He authored novels such as A Hind Let Loose and Rough Justice, along with short story collections, essays, and a travel book. After retiring, he focused on writing until his death in Manchester on May 28, 1928, at the age of 61.
