Meer over het boek
A compelling debut novel follows two Black men overseeing the destruction and gentrification of predominantly Black neighborhoods in Atlanta before the 1996 Olympics. Jacob and Daniel work for a real estate development company responsible for revitalizing Summerhill, a neighborhood where “revitalization” means displacing residents. Brooklyn-born Jacob, a recent Morehouse graduate, carries the hopes of his parents and dreams of a fulfilling life. In contrast, Atlanta native Daniel feels tired, angry, and disillusioned with his career, yearning for change. Despite their differences, both men confront similar challenges: accepting their sexuality, managing family pressures, grappling with the morality of their jobs, and enduring the trauma of being Black in America. As their parallel journeys unfold, Jacob and Daniel face towering obstacles and must decide what sacrifices they are willing to make for themselves and their communities. This bold and moving narrative explores the need for intimacy, the impact of internalized homophobia, and the complex relationships Black men have with family and each other, all while navigating the restrictive masculinity often imposed upon them.
