The first part deals with Greek cosmology and is the longest, the most elaborate and, on the whole, the liveliest part of a book which never deviates into dullness. The dominant thought in Greek cosmology, Collingwood holds, was the microcosm-macrocosm analogy, nature being the substance of something ensouled where "soul" meant the self-moving. Part II is "The Renaissance View of Nature ." Collingwood describes the rise and decline of the deists' view of Nature as a machine designed by the Great Contriver who, having turned it out, watches it go. Part III, "The Modern View of Nature," deals with very recent or contemporary philosophy and science, discerning in it a radical evolutionism first in biology and later in cosmology. Remains to this day a classic text in the history of ideas.

Very rare in dust jacket ! This is the 1937 second edition (the first edition was 1936). This is a reprint of the 1937 second edition from 1949. Retired library copy, which is why the thin dust jacket is still attached to the blue and gold book. Very nice shape on the jacket, with all the library markings but also a nice mylar cover

El interes de Collingwood por las cuestiones esteticas fue uno de los mas persistentes a lo largo de toda su obra. Asi pues, todo lo expuesto en este libro tiene una aplicacion practica, directa o indirectamente, a la condicion del arte en la actualidad.

Collingwood'a göre, doğa bilimi, varlığı başka bir düşünce biçimine bağlı olan bir düşünce biçimidir ve doğa biliminin bize anlattıklarını bağlı olduğu düşünce biçimini hesaba katmadan ele almamız uygun olmaz. Bu düşünce biçimi ise tarihtir. Düşüncenin biçimi olan doğa bilimi hep bir tarih bağlamında vardır, varlığı tarihsel düşünceye dayanır. Bundan ötürü, tarihin ne olduğunu sorusu yanıtlanamaz.
