Robert Antelme byl během druhé světové války zapojen do francouzského odboje. Roku 1944 byl zatčen a deportován do koncentračního tábora Buchenwald. Po skončení války ho při návštěvě koncentračního tábora Dachau objevil v hrozném stavu François Mitterrand a připravil jeho návrat do Paříže. O svých zážitcích z koncentračních táborů napsal knihu Patříme k lidem.
