Erzählungen muss man so schreiben, einfach, kurz und klar', befand Alexander Puschkin selbstbewusst über seine eigenen Geschichten. Auf subtile Weise geben sie Einblicke in die Welt der Zarenzeit. Da heiratet ein junges Mädchen den falschen Mann, ein Duell nimmt einen sonderbaren Verlauf, und ein angetrunkener Sargschreiner lädt die Verstorbenen zur Einweihung seines Hauses ein. Puschkin war der erste große Meister der modernen russischen Literatur, und seine Geschichten bieten den besten Einstieg in sein vielgestaltiges Werk.

Zum Zyklus der »Erzählungen Bjelkins«, der 1830 auf dem Höhepunkt seines Schaffens entstand, gehören einige der bekanntesten und besten Prosastücke Puschkins; außer der berühmten Novelle »Der Posthalter: Der Schuß«, »Der Schneesturm«, »Der Sargmacher«, »Das Fräulein als Bäuerin«.

Alexander Puschkin, geboren am 26. Mai 1799 in Moskau, ist am 29. Januar 1837 in St. Petersburg gestorben. Daß Petersburg Rußland „Fenster nach Europa“ sei, steht in Puschkins Poem Der eherne Reiter - laut Untertitel „Eine Petersburger Erzählung“, die erste der russischen Literatur. Ebenfalls ganz oder teilweise in Petersburg spielen die berühmten Novellen Der Postmeister, Pique Dame , das Fragment Ägyptische Nächte , die Erzählung Das einsame Häuschen auf der Basilius-Insel und die ebenso amüsante wie kunstvoll gereimte Anekdoten vom Häuschen in Kolomna . So ist in diesem Band vor dem Hintergrund Petersburgs der Dichter und Prosaist ebenso vetreten wie der ernste und der heitere Puschkin.

»Wir sind alle aus Gogols Mantel geschlüpft«, soll Dostojewski gesagt haben; und die unsterbliche Geschichte des Meisters eines absurden Humors steht daher auch am Beginn dieser Sammlung russischer Erzählungen. 21 Autoren aus zwei Jahrhunderten werden mit Glanzstücken ihrer Prosa vorgestellt: von Puschkin, Tolstoi, Tschechow über Bulgakow, Nabokov, Solschenizyn bis zu Tatjana Tolstaja, Lumila Petruschewskaja und Wiktor Pelewin. Ihre Erzählungen spiegeln Geschichte und Alltag Russlands, gestalten die ganze Vielfalt des Menschlichen – Vergeblichkeit und Trauer ebenso wie Neubeginn, Liebe und Glück – in einer uns in manchem ›fremden‹ und andersartig anmutenden Erzählkunst.

Die Erzählung "Pikowa dama" thematisiert das Verlangen nach Geld und die damit verbundenen menschlichen Abgründe. Im Mittelpunkt steht die dramatische Geschichte um die Hauptfigur, die in einem von Konflikten geprägten Russland lebt. Die Handlung entfaltet sich vor dem Hintergrund des Aufstands des Kosaken Pugatschow, dessen widersprüchliche Persönlichkeit die Dynamik der Erzählung prägt. Auch die Geschichte "Die Hauptmannstochter" ist in diesem Kontext angesiedelt und beleuchtet die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen den Charakteren sowie die Herausforderungen, die sie in einer von Unruhen geprägten Zeit bewältigen müssen. Beide Werke zeigen die tiefen menschlichen Emotionen und die moralischen Dilemmata, die aus dem Streben nach Macht und Reichtum entstehen.

Alexander Sergejevič Puškin (1799 – 1837) ostáva dodnes najžiarivejšou postavou v dejinách svetovej literatúry. Jeho dielo bolo skutočným priesečníkom doslova všetkých hlavných tendencií ruskej literatúry, v ňom sa navzájom zrážali a prelínali najrôznejšie vplyvy – domáce i cudzie – a pod tlakom tohto génia a na výslní jeho talentu sa pretvárali na novú hodnotu. Práve vďaka Puškinovi so seba s konečnou platnosťou striasla kláštorne zatuchnuté a neobyčajne plytké predstavy o poslaní umenia, prekonala osudové oneskorenie za Európou a už čoskoro mohla svojím kritickým realizmom vykročiť do literárneho novoveku. Jeho úchvatné literárne miniatúry Dejiny obce Goriuchina (1830), Roslavlev (1831) a Dubrovskij (1832 – 1833) patria k tým najlepším a najatraktívnejším dielam svetovej literatúry.

Нежная и трогательная история о царевне, злой мачехе, семи богатырях и королевиче Елисее известна как детям, так и взрослым. Главная героиня, царская дочь, осталась без матери, а новая жена царя, гордая своей красотой, была злобной и завистливой. Когда царевна подросла, она затмила мачеху своей добротой и красотой. Полная черной зависти, мачеха приказала служанке оставить царевну в лесу на съедение волкам, но служанка пожалела девушку. Семь богатырей укрыли её, пока волшебное зеркальце не выдало тайну о её жизни. Злоба мачехи возобладала, и она отправилась в лес с отравленным яблоком, чтобы убить падчерицу. На поиски царевны отправился её жених, королевич Елисей. После долгих странствий Ветер помог ему найти пещеру, где царевна спала в хрустальном гробу. Любовь Елисея оказалась сильнее смерти: гроб разбился, и царевна ожила, а мачеха умерла от злости. Пушкин писал свои сказки не для детей, но Конашевич, с яркими и выразительными иллюстрациями, сделал их доступными для юной аудитории.
