In his first novel, Saint-Exupéry pays homage to “those elemental divinities-night, day, mountain, sea, and storm,” turning an account of a routine mail flight from France to North Africa into an epic rendering of the pioneer days of commercial aviation. The Wild Ass's Skin is Honoré de Balzac's 1831 novel that tells the story of a young man, Raphaël de Valentin, who discovers a piece of shagreen, in this case a rough untanned piece of a wild ass's skin, which has the magical property of granting wishes. However the fulfillment of the wisher's desire comes at a cost, after each wish the skin shrinks a little bit and consumes the physical energy of the wisher. "The Wild Ass's Skin" is at once both a work of incredible realism, in the descriptions of Parisian life and culture at the time, and also a work of supernatural fantasy, in the desires that are fulfilled by the wild ass's skin. Balzac uses this fantastical device masterfully to depict the complexity of the human nature in civilized society.

Autor nechává příběh běžet ve dvou časových rovinách. Ke konci druhé světové války, která mu poskytuje modelovou situaci a vytváří klíčový moment pozdějšího vnitřního konfliktu hlavního hrdiny, a o patnáct let později. Ústřední postava - lékárník Kálmán Kerekes - je člověk, který jako šedesátiletý se dopoští ze strachu a slabošství činu, jenž ho pronásleduje po zbytek života. Svou zbabělostí zaviní smrt dvou lidí. Tento moment zůstává jako trvalá vnitřní jizva, kterou nic nemůže překrýt. Pocit viny, především však strach z odhalení, formují život Kálmána Kerekese, nedopřávají mu chvilku pokoje a štěstí. Pod tímto tlakem se zprostředkovaně ocitají i Kerekesova žena a syn, takže ani jejich životy se neodvíjejí v pohodě a klidu. Autor staví celý příběh provinění, utrpení z pocitu viny a nezbytné odplaty citlivě a nezaujatě. Jeho viník není však klasickým provinilcem, ale člověkem, který především zničil sebe, svou důstojnost, neboť se provinil proti lidskosti a tím proti sobě.
