Works by the polymathic French author Victor Segalen, including a previously untranslated essay, a novel, and a libretto. Victor Segalen (1878–1919) had one of France's most curious literary careers, applying his imagination to musicology, ethnography, exploration, medicine, synesthetics, Chinese history, and the occult. This collection gathers together his previously untranslated essay “Synesthestics and the Symbolist School” and his novel In A Sound World , a work of fantasy concerning an inventor lost in his own immersive harmonic space. Segalen's medical training (he had a career as a ship's doctor) inspired an interest in the link between the prevailing Symbolism of the time and synesthesia, the condition whereby one sense affects the perception of another. This edition also includes an essay by the musician and cultural historian David Toop that explores the historical context of Segalen's ideas. Also included is Segalen's libretto for Orpheus Rex, a collaboration with the composer Claude Debussy, which he would use as an opportunity for further explorations of his synesthetic concepts. This book makes available all three texts for the first time in English.

A sa mort, en 1919, l'énigmatique Victor Segalen n'avait publié que trois ouvrages - Les Immémoriaux, Stèles et Peintures -, lesquels annonçaient déjà la puissance d'une œuvre qui, paradoxalement, restait à venir. Car Segalen avait beaucoup écrit pendant sa brève existence de quarante années et cet Essai sur l'exotisme fait partie d'un ensemble posthume désormais accessible. Très tôt, en effet, Segalen avait formé le projet de réévaluer la notion d'exotisme. De lui redonner une authenticité, une plénitude, qui lui avaient été confisquées par la mode littéraire issue de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. Pour lui, l'exotisme, c'est d'abord une catégorie de la sensibilité qui permet de "percevoir le divers". Et l'exotisme, c'est l'art, subtil, d'accéder à l'autre. Or, au début de ce siècle, à l'heure de l'universalisme colonial, rien n'est moins "politiquement correct" que de tels propos. Aujourd'hui, ce texte a conservé toute sa force et son audace. Servi par une prose incroyablement fraîche, il reste, comme le souhaitait son auteur, un irremplaçable "bréviaire de la différence" qui vaut plus, et mieux, que bien des traités d'ethnologie.

Victor Segalen (1878-1919) was a French doctor, archaeologist, explorer and author who traveled extensively in Polynesia and China. Journey to the Land of the Real (Equipee in French) is the summation of the author's life as traveler and poet, and a summation that is all the more surprising since he could know nothing of his imminent and mysterious death: Journey appeared posthumously. In part, it recounts an actual expedition through China to the borders of Tibet in the last years of the First World War; there are real adventures in a country now lost to time, but more mysterious events too. Segalen describes this work as lying "between what one dreams of and what one does, between what one desires and what one obtains; between the summit conquered by a metaphor and the altitude reached on foot by exertion; between the winged dance of the idea and the tough march along the road." Here is a masterpiece that effortlessly takes its place among the classics of travel writing precisely because it is so much more than that; among its brief chapters are consummate prose poems that reveal a lucid, eloquent and very likable author at the height of his powers.
