Bernhard von Cotta (1808-1879) war einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Geologen. Nach seinem Mineralogie- und Geologiestudium in Freiberg und Heidelberg beteiligte er sich an den Arbeiten zu einer geognostischen Karte von Sachsen, später übernahm er die Leitung dieses Projekts. 1842 erhielt von Cotta eine Anstellung als Professor für Geognose in Leipzig und war 1848 einer der Mitgründer der „Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft“.
