Nezval v jevištní báseň, v níž nejde tolik o příběh samotný, jako o básnické vyznění a rozehrání citových prožitků obou hlavních postav. Text hry uchovává místy prózu povídky v původním překladu A. Váni, avšak řadí ji do 7-8 villonovských či rostandovských balad, jejichž verše a rýmy se stále vracejí jako hudební motivy v opeře, takže 7 obrazů hry je napsáno v podstatě málo verši v bezpočtu obměn. Dějové jádro příběhu posunul básník do 19. století, takže šlechtické kupce Manoniných půvabů proměnil ve velkokapitalistické pány Duvaly, kterým se zde nakonec dostává výsměchu i porážky: Manon, sice lehkomyslně a naivně dychtivá přepychu a flirtu, přijímá to vše bez pocitu viny, neboť je si jista, že tak svému chudému rytíři Des Grieuxovi pomáhá. Přesila církevních a peněžních intrik dohání milence k deportaci za moře a k záhubě, nezabrání jim však v tom, aby Tibergům a Duvalům neunikli alespoň v okamžiku smrti, kdy po prvé navzájem pochopí důvod svých poklesků a naplní alespoň své zdánlivě pošetilé heslo "Ach, umřít pro krásu ... "
