Die Schweiz und gutes Design sind nicht voneinander zu trennen: Das Schweizer Taschenmesser ist nur eines der zahlreichen Produkte, die das weiße Kreuz auf rotem Grund populär gemacht haben. Geradlinigkeit und eine einprägsame Form kennzeichnen auch die dreieckige Toblerone-Schokolade, Funktionalität ist beim allseits bekannten Spargelschäler das formgebende Merkmal, und nur wenige Schrifttypen sind so klar wie die Helvetica. Doch Swiss Design kann weit mehr als Strenge und Funktionalität herauszustellen; junge Designer der Alpenrepublik haben alle Gestaltungsvarianten zu bieten, die sich in der heutigen Zeit finden und dieses Spektrum an Kreativität und Qualität präsentiert der Band Swiss Design.

In contrast to a decade ago, when ecological architecture was considered a luxury, it has now become essentially impossible to build without considering sustainability issues. Aspects of ecological balance have become an important part in the planning and construction process. In recent years, a canon of standard methods and possibilities has emerged to achieve this goal of environmentally friendly architecture. However, there are architects whose ideas and techniques for sustainable buildings go beyond the standards that have now been established such as the LEED rating system and are sometimes also mandatory. This publication discusses such new and innovative solutions for ecological construction. The author presents projects from all over the world that stand out from the standard measures and concepts and point the way to the future.

'Green Design' encompasses products from different areas of life representing different aspects of environmentally friendly and sustainable design. It presents around 100 products that are not only green, but are also beautiful and functional everyday objects that qualify through certain principles of environmental sustainability.

Elegant, innovative or even extravagant design can hardly exist on its own today. The ecological and sustainable design of products is the argument that clinches the sale – especially where one is prepared to pay something more for design. That principal applies as well to the manufacture of products, for example those which are resource sparing, as well as their application, if they are low-emission and finally their disposal, if they are compostable. Green Design, Vol. 2 shows the most varied strategies of environmentally compatible design. Especially notable is the recycling of unusual materials, fair production and fair trade, low-emission use and finally the principal of conversion instead of disposal.

What do they have in common ? Talent, imagination, and a double-page spread designed by him, her or them on which every detail is significant and nothing has been arranged by chance. Whether minimalistic or colorful, experimental or sumptuous, because they are authentic and unique, the compositions are true works of art which are the best way to show what graphic design is all about.

Climate change and environmental pollution, rising energy prices and dwindling resources pose major challenges for the world of construction today. If sustainability is to become a global reality, it must also be designed and expressed with trend-setting aesthetics: The carefully selected sample projects of contemporary architecture show how this can be implemented in compelling ways. They offer an informative overview of current, very different concepts, approaches and techniques. Sustainable building also means that ecological parameters involve not only all aspects of the actual building, but also the construction process and the afterlife in the sense of deconstruction and conversion, all of which must be considered by the planner as early as the design process. It is becoming increasingly important not to focus on short-term goals, but above all, on long-term ones.

How can homes be upgraded to meet today's demands - from living comfort to energy efficiency and digital requirements? How can the fusion of the historic and the new be used as a design element? The use of existing residential buildings scores not only with the charm of what has been handed down, be it a baroque villa, a 19th-century farmhouse, or a post-war bungalow, but actually also always with an excellent ecological balance. The extensive reworking, whether modernization, renovation or extension, is a widespread and thoroughly rewarding task for many architects. Since the initial situation is documented for each of the presented projects, the reader can clearly understand the redesign process.
