    De auteur groeide op in een huis waar fotografie en liefde voor de natuur hoge prioriteit kregen, wat natuurlijk leidde tot een levenslange passie voor natuurfotografie. Zijn literaire carrière begon in 1985, toen hij de behoefte aan een kwalitatieve fotografische gids voor Zuid-Afrikaanse zoogdieren identificeerde. Voortbouwend op een uitgebreide persoonlijke collectie van zoogdierfoto's, begon de auteur met het creëren van een gids, die zijn eerste publicatie werd. Ondanks aanvankelijke schrijfuitdagingen werd de tekst, met hulp van een erkende expert, voltooid en het boek werd gepubliceerd, later ook vertaald in het Duits. Vervolgens volgden er meer gidsen gericht op zoogdieren en vogels van Zuidelijk Afrika, waarvan vele meerdere keren zijn herdrukt en herzien. Deze succesvolle publicaties vestigden de reputatie van de auteur meer als schrijver dan als de fotograaf die hij oorspronkelijk wilde zijn.
