W części II i III Whitehead syntetycznie streszcza swoją filozofię przyrody i metafizykę, które w części I aplikuje do wyjaśnienia czynników umożliwiających powstawanie cywilizacji. Die aus einer 1927 gehaltenen Vorlesung hervorgegangene Schrift Whiteheads entstand unmittelbar vor der Ausarbeitung seines Hauptwerks Prozeß und Realität. Das Buch ist eine in seinem Werk sonst nirgendwo so vorfindbare Ausarbeitung kulturphilosophischer Positionen, die um die soziale und kulturelle Bedeutung der Symbolisierung zentriert sind. Whitehead interpretiert die Symbolisierung ausgehend von der Freilegung einer Grundstruktur der Erfahrung und zeigt, in welchem Sinne kulturelle Symbole eine wesentliche Funktion für die integrierte und vernünftige Richtunggebung unseres Lebens haben.

Anglický filozof, matematik a logik Alfred North Whitehead je jednou z najvýraznejších a najoriginálnejších postáv filozofie 20. storočia. Roku 1924 Whitehead ako 63-ročný prijíma pozvanie vedenia Harvardskej univerzity v Spojených štátoch amerických a po vyše štyridsiatich rokoch prednášania matematiky, resp. fyzikálnej matematiky v Cambridgei a v Londýne začína prednášať filozofiu. Roky 1924 až 1937, keď nepretržite pôsobil ako profesor filozofie Harvardskej univerzity, patria vôbec k najplodnejším v celej jeho životnej tvorbe. V tomto období vydal deväť kníh, medzi nimi rozsiahle dielo Proces a skutočnosť, v ktorom do detailov vypracúva kategoriálny systém svojej "filozofie organizmov". Filozofickú slávu mu však prinieslo už dielo Veda a moderný svet (Science and the Modern World, 1925), ktoré vydávame v slovenskom preklade. Vo Whiteheadovom myšlienkovom vývine zaujíma dôležité miesto: tematicky je orientované na problematiku prírodnej filozofie a zároveň v nej autor načrtáva hlavné východiská svojej organizmickej koncepcie sveta. Preklad tohto diela sme doplnili o dve kapitoly z Whiteheadovej poslednej knihy Mody myslenia (Modes of thought, 1937), v ktorej autor domýšľa a dotvára svoju prírodnú filozofiu, svoje chápanie skutočnosti ako organického systému.

Studie seznamuje čtenáře s moderní logikou z pohledu sto let starého (vzatého ze spisu Principia Mathematica). Jejím cílem je, kromě představení klasického analytického postupu a myšlenky důkazu, nabídnout vlastní odpovědi na některé otázky, které dnes studium moderní logiky provázejí: Z čeho v logice vycházíme? K čemu nám jsou pravidla? Mluvíme jen v metajazyce?
