The narrative captures English poet Charles Doughty's remarkable journeys through the Arabian deserts, showcasing his discoveries and experiences. Renowned for its lyrical prose and comprehensive detail, this work set a standard for ambitious travel literature in the early 20th century. Written in a style reminiscent of the King James Bible, it combines extravagance with creativity. T.E. Lawrence's endorsement in the 1920s revitalized interest in the book, leading to its republication, including a rare 1921 edition featuring his introduction.

    • T.E. Lawrence, also known as "Lawrence of Arabia," wrote Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph from his memories of serving as a liaison officer with rebel forces during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks (1916-1918). Possessed of a brilliant military mind and an unmatched knowledge of the region and the Arab people, Lawrence led the revolt alongside the charismatic Faisal I, sounding the death knell for the Ottoman Empire and paving the way for a new colonial power in the region: the British. Writing from memory after his original manuscript and detailed notes were lost, Lawrence was able to privately publish a polished version of his autobiograhpical account in 1922. It is from this edition that he created the abridged version in 1927 which would become a best-seller, titling it Revolt in the Desert. This important historic work vividly portrays one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the Middle East while offering rich insight into one of Britain's esteemed national heroes.

Revolt in the Desert : The Abridged Edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom
    • 'I am not much of a hero-worshipper, but I could have followed T.E. Lawrence over the edge of the world.' John Buchan Although 'continually and bitterly ashamed' that the Arabs had risen in revolt against the Turks as a result of fraudulent British promises of self-rule, Lawrence led them in a triumphant campaign which revolutionized the art of war. 'Seven Pillars of Widsom' recreates epic events with extraordinary vividness. In the words of E.M. Forster, 'Round this tent-pole of a military chronicle, T.E. has hung an unexampled fabric of portraits, descriptions, philosophies, emotions, adventures, dreams.' However flawed, Lawrence is one of the twentieth century's most fascinating figures. This is the greatest monument to his character and achievements.
