Alfonso Zapico is een ervaren illustrator en ontwerper. "Los cuatro cuentos que componen este volumen único fueron escritos entre junio y octubre de 1941 en la cárcel de Alicante. Se trata de «El potro obscuro», «El conejito», «Un hogar en el árbol» y «La gatita Mancha y el ovillo rojo». El poeta entregó los textos al periodista y dibujante Eusebio Oca Pérez, que ilustró dos de las historias, «El potro obscuro» y «El conejito». Los cuentos infantiles fueron escritos sobre hojas de papel higiénico con las que el poeta armó un precario cuaderno. El manuscrito, formado por seis hojas pequeñas, cosidas con hilo ocre y con bordes envejecidos, es un emocionante documento del amor del poeta hacia su hijo Manolillo. Los ilustradores Damián Flores, Sara Morante, Adolfo Serra y Alfonso Zapico han ilustrado estos cuatro textos, los últimos que escribió el poeta.
