V zápiscích bezvýznamného, zbabělého úředníka, který si vycvičí hejno krys a jejich prostřednictvím se mstí jednotlivci i společnosti za vlastní nicotnost, se odvíjí hrůzný příběh malého člověka, jenž se nečekaně dostal k moci. Ve své duševní a citové prázdnotě si autorův antihrdina neuvědomuje, že skutečná i domnělá příkoří si způsobil vlastní zbabělou neschopností a že se mstí na nevinných.

When his nagging mother discovers a rat infestation, the anonymous writer of these notebooks sets out to drown the pests, but finds himself unable to go through with it.
