In the darkness of the early morning of 3 March 1949, practically all of the Transylvanian aristocracy were arrested in their beds and loaded into lorries. That same day the Romanian Workers' Party was pleased to announce the successful deportation and dispossession of all large landowners.

The narrative unfolds through Jaap Scholten's personal journey as he responds to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, starting with his efforts to assist a family fleeing Kyiv. His involvement deepens as he raises funds for drones and travels with an American sniper, gaining firsthand insights into the realities of war. Scholten's experiences include attending a poignant funeral in Irpin and learning about a daring mission to rescue a newborn from an underground hospital in Mariupol, highlighting the human stories amidst the conflict.

Am 11. Juni 1977 werden in Groningen zwei Jungen geboren. Am gleichen Morgen und keine zwanzig Kilometer entfernt findet eine Geiselnahme, die ganz Holland drei Wochen lang in Atem gehalten hat, ein brutales Ende. Viele Jahre später kommt heraus, daß die Kinder versehentlich vertauscht wurden. Besonders einer von ihnen, Octave, leidet unter dem Gedanken, in der falschen Familie aufgewachsen zu sein. Er hat eine starke Beziehung zu jener Frau entwickelt, die ihn ihr ganzes Leben beschützt und als ihren Sohn angenommen hat. Aber er lebt dennoch mit einem Schmerz, den zu unterdrücken ihm nicht gelingen will. Das Gefühl wird immer drängender, daß er herausfinden muß, was dieser Schmerz bedeutet, bevor er sich der Verantwortung des Lebens als Erwachsener stellen kann.
