Isabelle Eberhardt notiert am 7. Juli 1902 in ihr Tagebuch, dass sie schon als Kind Nomadin war und dies ihr ganzes Leben bleiben wird, verliebt in wechselhafte Horizonte und unerforschte Fernen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt ist sie bereits in der algerischen Sahara unterwegs, wo die Nomaden leben. In Burnus und Turban gibt sie sich als „Si Mahmoud“ oder „Mahmoud Saadi“ aus, um Zugang zur Welt der Männer zu erhalten. Sie raucht, trinkt und kifft mit ihnen.
