Po zakotvení v Aucklandu na Novém Zélandu odešla posádka na břeh a loď se díky nedopatření dostala zpět na moře. Die Beschreibung der Reise dient Verne als Rahmen, in den er neben geografischen und natürlichen Besonderheiten den Hauptabenteuer-Motiv einfügt: Colonel Munros Rache für den Tod seiner Frau. Verantwortlich dafür ist Nana Sahib, ein ehemaliger Anführer des Sepoy-Aufstands von 1857, der seit zehn Jahren wegen seiner Verbrechen gesucht wird. Munros Frau wurde auf Nanas Befehl in einen Brunnen geworfen und dort begraben. Es wird jedoch auch enthüllt, dass Colonel Munro für den Tod von Nanas Gefährtin verantwortlich ist.
