David Ross Brower was een vooraanstaand milieuactivist en de oprichter van talloze milieuorganisaties. In zijn jeugd was hij een opmerkelijk bergbeklimmer. Hij richtte de Sierra Club Foundation, het John Muir Institute for Environmental Studies, Friends of the Earth, de League of Conservation Voters, het Earth Island Institute, de North Cascades Conservation Council en de Fate of the Earth Conferences op.
