Mit seinen Werken hat er der Farbe eine neue Dimension verliehen, vor allem die Farbe Rot mit ihrer starken Symbolkraft nimmt in seinem Œuvre eine besondere Position ein: Rupprecht Geiger (1908–2009), Mitbegründer der Künstlergruppe ZEN 49, dessen Name wesentlich mit der Entdeckung der »Shaped canvases« verbunden wird, gilt heute weltweit als einer der wichtigsten Künstler der abstrakten Farbmalerei. In den Anfängen seiner Malerei nach 1945 bezog sich Rupprecht Geiger auf die Tradition des Blauen Reiters, »die abstrakte Malerei durch Bild und Wort zu verbreiten«. Zusammen mit Künstlern wie Willi Baumeister und Fritz Winter gründete er daraufhin die Gruppe ZEN 49, um eine dezidierte Abkehr von der Naturnachahmung in der gegenstandslosen Malerei zu praktizieren. Von Beginn an stand die Farbe im Zentrum seines Schaffens, zu seinem Kompositionsvokabular gehörten die Kreisform als Abbild der Sonne, das Rechteck und das Quadrat. Auch mit international beachteter Kunst am Bau machte sich Geiger ab den 1950er-Jahren einen Namen. 2002 repräsentierte er Deutschland bei der XXV Bienal de São Paulo mit einer aus vier großformatigen Leinwänden bestehenden Raumarbeit. Die Wiederkehr der Sechzigerjahre-Ästhetik in Kunst und Design schlug einen Bogen zu frühen Werken Geigers, der bereits 1965 begonnen hatte, mit Spritzpistole und fluoreszierenden Tagesleuchtfarben zu experimentieren, und zeigt, wie aktuell seine Kunst geblieben ist.
