Tintin in Tibet is a highly regarded book. In fact, it’s arguably the most highly regarded book in the entire Adventures of Tintin collection, and it’s easy to see why. While I could recall the events of some of the stories I’d read as a child almost word-for-word, and while I harbour a deep affection for particular adventures in the series, I don’t think I was looking forward to revisiting any of the classic Tintin stories nearly as much as I was anticipating flicking through Tintin in Tibet. I remember the book filling me with a tremendous sense of optimism and hope as a child, a story of faith and hope against impossible odds, deeply moving because of its relative intimacy.

Tim im Lande der Sowjets, erschaffen 1929, war das erste Abenteuer der Tim und Strupppi-Reihe und stellt damit den Beginn der frankobelgischen Comic-Tradition dar. Der damals noch 21-jährige Hergé hatte einen Helden geschaffen, der weltweit bekannt wurde und in insgesamt 24 Alben seine legendären Abenteuer erlebte. Fast 90 Jahre nach Erscheinen wurde dieser Comic-Klassiker nun endlich koloriert. Die Vorzugsausgabe enthält zusätzlich ein 16-seitiges Dossier von Philippe Godin über die Entstehung des Abenteuers sowie als zusätzlichen Druck die fehlende Seite, die nicht im Album abgedruckt wurde. Bei seiner Rückkehr nach Brüssel am Ende des Albums wird er begeistert empfangen. Politisches Statement oder Jugendsünde? „Tim im Lande der Sowjets“ ist ein sehr politisches Album, das ganz im Zeichen des Anti-Kommunismus steht. Über viele Jahrzehnte nach seinem Erstabdruck war dieses Abenteuer nicht verfügbar, bis es schließlich Anfang der 1970er Jahre offiziell nachgedruckt wurde. Es bietet einen faszinierenden Einblick in die damalige Sichtweise auf die Sowjetunion und ist ein wertvolles Zeitdokument. Hergé selbst aber hat es später als „Jugendsünde“ bezeichnet.

Neben seiner Arbeit an „Tim und Struppi“ arbeitete Hergé für einige Zeit an einer Familienserie um ein Geschwisterpaar und seinen Affen, die Abenteuer auf der ganzen Welt erleben. Fünf Alben erschienen von „Jo, Jette und Jocko“. Carlsen legt die Abenteuer nun wieder neu auf. Band 3 und 4 sind ein Zweiteiler. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Geschichte steht ein Überschallflugzeug und der Rekordflug über den Atlantik.
