Ronald Jager, een voormalig professor filosofie aan Yale, wijdde zich na zijn academische carrière aan het schrijverschap, waarbij hij diepe inspiratie putte uit zijn opvoeding op een boerderij in Michigan, een onderwerp dat hij levendig documenteerde.
