Tato publikace, nejprve v angličtině a později revidovaná i ve francouzštině, položila základy pro mahlerovská studia. Další díly vyšly na počátku 80. let a potvrdily její význam, přičemž poslední, čtvrtý díl, byl vydán anglicky v roce 2008.
