Set in the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War, this trilogy follows three-year-old Eva, an orphan living with her grandmother in a secluded valley. After her grandmother is accused of witchcraft, they flee to her uncle's home, only for further danger to arise. Eva eventually finds refuge in a hidden place known as the "Heimlichen Grund." Upon returning, she brings along Peter, an older orphan, and together they navigate life with their caregivers, engaging in daily chores and forming a deep friendship amidst their struggles.
