Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, and Paul Strand are iconic photographers of the 20th century, and this volume presents the Metropolitan Museum’s exceptional collection of their works for the first time. Stieglitz, a fervent supporter of photography and modern art through his “Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession” and the journal Camera Work, was also an accomplished photographer. His contributions include portraits, landscapes, city views, and cloud studies, featuring a composite portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe, selected by her for the Museum. Steichen, renowned for his fashion photography and celebrity portraits, collaborated with Stieglitz and exemplified Photo-Secessionist photography. His notable works include three large variant prints of The Flatiron and moonlit photographs of Rodin’s Balzac. The final double issue of Camera Work, devoted to Paul Strand, marked a significant shift in photography. Strand’s images from 1915 and 1916 explored themes of movement, abstraction, and street portraits, transitioning from the soft-focus Pictorialist style to a more modern, graphic approach. This collection features Strand’s rare large platinum prints, many unique exhibition pieces. The photographs showcased are among the Metropolitan’s most treasured holdings.

This text is devoted to the colourful landscapes produced during the Fauvist period of 1904-1908. An essay on the emergence of the Fauve landscape is followed by four essays devoted to individual sites and such topics as Fauvism's impact on tourism and politics. Another essay concentrates on the critical landscape, in essence the critics' reception of these paintings. Matisse, Braque, Derain, Vlaminck, Dufy, Marquet, Manguin and Friesz are represented with examples of their works.

This groundbreaking volume examines the significant transformations and continuities in the Byzantine Empire from the seventh to the ninth century. During this period, the Empire's southern provinces, particularly in North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean, were pivotal trade hubs connecting regions from Spain to China. These areas faced historic upheavals as Christian and Jewish communities interacted with the emerging Islamic world, leading to a remarkable cultural cross-fertilization by the ninth century. Leading international scholars bring this extraordinary age to life, complemented by stunning illustrations of notable arts and artifacts from the period. Rich images of authority, religion, and trade—manifested in precious metals, vibrant textiles, fine ivories, intricate mosaics, manuscripts, and icons—highlight the dynamic interplay between Byzantine styles and the evolving Islamic aesthetic. This masterful exploration of two centuries that shaped the medieval world offers a profound interpretation of a period with lasting implications for the modern era. The publication coincides with the exhibition held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, showcasing the age of transition from the 7th to 9th century.
