César Domela (1900-1992), artiste néerlandais, commence sa carrière dans la première moitié des années 1920 comme membre du groupe De Stijl. Par la suite, il s?éloigne des principes du néoplasticisme et abandonne progressivement la peinture à l?huile pour réaliser des reliefs conciliant géométrie et organicisme, devenant un des maîtres incontestables du genre. Après plusieurs séjours à Berlin, où il a l?occasion de côtoyer de nombreux artistes influents ? Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Alexander Rodtchenko, Raoul Hausmann, Naum Gabo, Kurt Schwitters, Carl Buchheister? ? et de s?essayer à plusieurs pratiques telles que le graphisme, le photomontage, la typographie ou encore l?architecture d?intérieur, Domela s?installe définitivement à Paris en 1933. Il devient membre de Cercle et Carré, puis d?Abstraction Création, groupes pour lesquels il contribue activement aux revues.
