Steve Chilton is een toegewijde hardloper en gekwalificeerde atletiekcoach met uitgebreide ervaring in het berglopen. Zijn werk is uitgebreid gepubliceerd, met name in zijn rollen als voorzitter van de Society of Cartographers en voorzitter van de ICA Commissie voor Neocartografie. Hij is sterk betrokken bij het OpenStreetMap-project en is medeauteur van "OpenStreetMap: Using and Enhancing the Free Map of the World." Zijn lange hardloopcarrière omvat deelname aan vele klassieke berglopen en bergmarathons.
