Dan werd geboren en groeide op in noordoost New Jersey. Na zijn studie landschapsarchitectuur werd hij jarenlang drummer in een rockabilly/punkband, waarmee hij ook een jaar in Londen woonde en speelde. Na het einde van de band reisde hij naar Israël om de Bijbel te bestuderen en de geldigheid van het christendom te onderzoeken. Terug in Santa Cruz raakte hij diep betrokken bij kerkelijke activiteiten en behaalde uiteindelijk een Graduate Certificate in Bijbelstudies aan het Multnomah Seminary. Na acht jaar als jeugdpastor te hebben gediend, mede-richtte hij een samenkomst voor aanbidding genaamd "Graceland" op, die uitgroeide tot een bediening voor jongvolwassenen en alle leeftijden. Later maakte hij deel uit van het leiderschapsteam dat de Vintage Faith Church lanceerde, waar hij nu als hoofdpredikant dient en toezicht houdt op missiegerichte aspecten. Hij is momenteel bezig met een doctoraat in Predikantschap.
