Een van haar eerste werken, een verhaal over een magische vogelverschrikker met een voorliefde voor kinderbloed, werd voorgelezen aan haar derde klas. Ze studeerde later Engels en film- en mediastudies. Momenteel woont ze in Los Angeles, waar ze voortdurend werkt aan haar scenario's en romans. Barz schrijft ook onder het pseudoniem Sloan Archer.
