Matei Vișniec beschouwt literatuur als een ruimte van vrijheid, geïnspireerd door Kafka, Dostojevski en de surrealisten, en afwijzend van het socialistisch realisme. Hij gelooft in cultureel verzet en het vermogen van theater en poëzie om ideologische manipulatie en hersenspoeling bloot te leggen. Zijn vroege Roemeense poëzie stond bekend om zijn helderheid en bitterheid, hoewel zijn vroege toneelstukken niet mochten worden opgevoerd. Na zijn emigratie naar Frankrijk begon hij in het Frans te schrijven en zijn werken worden sindsdien internationaal opgevoerd.
