    Alice Thornton schreef op hoge leeftijd een levendig gedetailleerde autobiografie, waarin ze haar leven afschilderde als een van bijna voortdurend lijden. Thornton, die in Noord-Engeland woonde, uit plichtsbesef trouwde, negen kinderen baarde (van wie er zes stierven) en op middelbare leeftijd weduwe werd, biedt in haar verhaal een rauwe weergave van alledaagse worstelingen.
