This novel opens with the death of playboy stockbroker, Alvin Benson, who is found in his brownstone mansion with a bullet through his head. First on the scene is Philo Vance, amateur detective, who is at once intrigued by the absence of Alvin's toupee and his false teeth. These odd clues set him in pursuit of an elusive murderer. He confronts a host of suspects and uncovers a number of family skeletons in his quest for the truth. S.S. van Dine is the pen name of Willard Huntington Wright (1888-1939) who wrote this novel in 1926. He wrote 13 best-selling crime novels and his amateur detective, Philo Vance was later immortalized on screen by William Powell in "The Canary Murder Case".

    • The colorful romance by the English author tells of the renewing power of true human emotion. A doctor, after a disappointment, falls into depression and, at a friend's suggestion, travels to the Canary Islands. During the sea voyage, he meets a young woman who, by her dreamy and sensitive nature, does not fit into the surrounding society and mentally connects with him. After landing, both remain on the islands, where a yellow fever epidemic breaks out, and the doctor decides to help the poor sick from an isolated estate. The woman falls ill and, in the midst of the fever, turns to the hero who saves her life at the last moment. However, the two return to England, where they should part forever, but the open ending of the novel does not exclude a happy conclusion.

Behalve Miss Marple.

A wave of murders rocks a sanitarium—and it's up to the patients to stop them Broadway producer Peter Duluth sought solace in a bottle after his wife’s death; now, two years later and desperate to dry out, he enters a sanitarium, hoping to break his dependence on drink—but the institution doesn’t quite offer the rest and relaxation he expected. Strange, malevolent occurrences plague the hospital; and among other inexplicable events, Peter hears his own voice with an ominous warning: “There will be murder.” It soon becomes clear that a homicidal maniac is on the loose, and, with a staff every bit as erratic as its idiosyncratic patients, it seems everyone is a suspect—even Duluth’s new romantic interest, Iris Pattison. Charged by the baffled head of the ward with solving the crimes, it’s up to Peter to clear her name before the killer strikes again. Reprinted for the first time in over thirty years, A Puzzle for Fools is the atmospheric and complex mystery that first introduced Peter Duluth; the character and his love interest Iris went on to star in eight more novels, two of which were adapted for film.

Nefertiti - Kráska, která přichází. Sami staří Egypťané tak pojmenovali tajemnou a neobyčejně půvabnou královnu. Bohatý obraz osudů této podivuhodné ženy rozvíjí ve svém díle německý autor blízký našim čtenářům již svou předchozí výpravou za dobrodružstvím archeologie. Historik umění a germanista P. Vandenberg nazval svou knihu o dosud málo známé královně ,,archeologickou biografií"; poutavě a zevrubně tu na základě vědeckých výzkumů a poznatků rekonstruuje životopis jedné z nejzáhadnějších postav starověkého Egypta - dcery mittanského krále a manželky faraóna Achnatona, která měla silný osobní vliv ve státním a náboženském životě armanského období. Pozadí příběhu Nefertiti pak otevírá prostot pro vykreslení krátkého, leč oslnivého rozkvětu Achetatonu, města vybudovaného na počest boha Slunce Atona, a pro přiblížení způsobu života, obyčejů, politických událostí i celkového dění za Nové říše, odborně i čtenářsky nejpřitažlivějšího úseku staroegyptských dějin. Knihu doprovází bohatá fotografická příloha.

    • Hořká bída a nepopsatelné bohatství, závist, nenávist a intriky, záhadná smrt a politická vražda – to je rámec, v němž se odehrává největší archeologický objev tisíciletí: akce Tutanchamon. Čtvrtého listopadu 1922 odhalil Angličan Howard Carter, vyučený malíř, vchod do hrobky Tutanchamona: faraona zapomenutého už před třemi tisíci lety. Okolnosti této takřka neuvěřitelné historie, zasuté v zaprášených archivech v Káhiře a Oxfordu, vyhledal a doplnil pátráním u posledních očitých svědků. Knihu doprovází bohatá fotografická příloha.
