Published on the occasion of the legendary Czech photographer's eightieth birthday, Josef Returning offers a comprehensive look at Koudelka's life and work, featuring all of the series for which he has become so well known, among them Beginnings , Experiments , Theatre , Gypsies , Invasion 68 , Exiles and Panorama . Besides Koudelka's photographs, many of which have become canonical works of postwar photography, the book is notable for its inclusion of unique archival material, such as excerpts from his diaries, contact prints, examples of book or magazine mockups from 1969 in preparation for the Invasion 68 series, and photographs of friends, as well as other images from his personal life. The book was conceived and edited by Koudelka himself, making this volume an exceptional publication.

Během sedmi dnů srpna 1968 pořídil tehdy třicetiletý Josef Koudelka jedinečnou sérii fotografií zachycujících invazi vojsk Varšavské smlouvy do Československa, kterou se později podařilo tajně vyvézt ze země. Jeho fotografie byly agenturou Magnum Photos zveřejněny k prvnímu výročí invaze roku 1969 v mnoha mezinárodních časopisech, aniž bylo uvedeno autorovo jméno. Až v roce 1984, po smrti svého otce a v době, kdy hrozba represí pro jeho rodinu pominula, poprvé veřejně přiznal své autorství těchto snímků. Josef Koudelka, který dnes patří k nejvýznamnějším světovým fotografům, po čtyřiceti letech prošel svůj archiv a vybral pro tuto knihu 249 fotografií, z nichž většina nebyla nikdy publikována. Kniha obsahuje též texty oficiálních prohlášení, dobová svědectví a text objasňující historické události srpna 1968.

Kniha přináší výběr textů z 68 deníků, které si fotograf Josef Koudelka (* 1938) vedl v průběhu posledních 51 let. Doplněn je přetisky dvojstránek rukopisů deníků a dosud nepublikovanými fotografiemi. Koudelkovy zápisky jsou velkým zdrojem informací o jeho životě a tvorbě i o světové fotografii od konce 60. let do současnosti. Ve zkratkách si zde zaznamenával komentáře k tvorbě osobností, jako byli Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, René Burri, William Klein, Jeff Wall, Thomas Struth, Martin Parr, nakladatel a editor Robert Delpire, kurátoři John Szarkowski a Anna Fárová, teoretik John Berger a řada dalších. Deníky je možné číst též jako příběh exulanta, který hledá svou roli v cizím prostředí a nechce obětovat to jediné, co ztrátou domova získal – svobodu.
