When two European scientists unexpectedly inherit an Indian rajah's fortune, they each create an experimental city in the American Northwest. France-Ville, founded by Dr. Francois Sarrasin, is a harmonious urban community focused on health and hygiene. In contrast, Stahlstadt, or City of Steel, is a fortress-like factory town created by the fanatical Herr Schultze, who is dedicated to manufacturing high-tech weapons. Schultze, Verne's first truly evil scientist, seeks world domination and racial supremacy, aiming to destroy France-Ville and its inhabitants to showcase his deadly creations. Dr. Sarrasin, a man of about fifty with refined features and lively eyes behind steel spectacles, often finds himself lost in thought. He reflects on the well-written English newspapers while seated comfortably in his hotel room in Brighton. Despite the early hour and his casual attire, he has already shaved and donned a white cravat. Around him are scattered copies of the Times, the Daily Telegraph, and the Daily News, hinting at his contemplative nature and the serious undertones of his mission. The juxtaposition of the two cities sets the stage for a dramatic conflict between ideals of health and hygiene versus the destructive ambitions of war and supremacy.

Nach einem Ehestreit flieht der niederländische Tabakhändler Mijnheer Jan Van Mitten mit seinem Diener Bruno von Rotterdam nach Istanbul, wo er seinen Freund und Geschäftspartner Keraban aufsucht. Kerabans Geschäftsräume liegen in dem in Europa gelegenen Teil Istanbuls. Dort treffen ihn Van Mitten und Bruno an. Keraban lädt sie zum Abendessen in seine Villa ein, die im in Asien gelegenen Teil Istanbuls – Scutari (Üsküdar) – liegt. Der europäische und der asiatische Teil Istanbuls werden durch den Bosporus getrennt. Als sie zusammen mit Kerabans trägem Diener Nizib über den Bosporus setzen wollen, treffen sie auf einen Offizier der Polizei, der eine Bekanntmachung verkündet, nach der eine kleine Steuer pro Person für die Überquerung des Bosporus mit dem Boot erhoben wird. Keraban weigert sich aus Hass auf die Regierung, diese Steuer zu bezahlen. Aus Trotz beschließt er, in seiner Kutsche das Schwarze Meer zu umrunden um in seiner Villa zu Abend zu essen. Da Van Mitten seine Einladung zum Abendessen angenommen hat, fahren er und sein Diener notgedrungen mit. Nachdem die Reisegesellschaft einen Angriff wilder Eber auf die Kutsche überstanden hat, gelangt sie nach Odessa.

Wanneer Kin-Fo, een schatrijke Chinees, hoort dat hij in één klap zijn in Amerika verkregen vermogen verloren heeft, denkt hij aan zelfmoord. Maar eerst sluit hij een levensverzekering af ten gunste van zijn aanstaande vrouw en betaald de eerste premie voor een periode van twee maanden. Het plegen van zelfmoord valt hem zwaarder dan hij gedacht had en vraagt zijn trouwe vriend, de filosoof Wang, hem dit probleem uit handen te nemen en hem binnen de gestelde termijn te vermoorden. Dan komt er bericht uit Amerika dat hij niet geruïneerd is, maar integendeel rijker dan ooit. Kin-Fo blaakt weer van levenslust, maar waar is Wang? De verzekeringsmaatschappij stelt hem twee bewakers ter beschikking. Wang weet echter van niets en kent alleen zijn belofte. Binnen vijfenveertig dagen zal hij toeslaan. Kin-Fo begint een wanhopige speurtocht.

Leur aventure marque la fin de l'âge de l'exploration pour ouvrir l'ère de la modernité : c'est désormais en ligne droite, dans un espace-temps réduit à une seule dimension que le tour du monde s'accomplit. Mais ce voyage linéaire, loin de n'être qu'un dérisoire retour au point de départ, est avant tout le terrain d'une transformation : l'excentrique gentleman qui regagne le 7, Savile Row n'est-il pas devenu «le plus heureux des hommes» ?
