Giuseppe Sergi

    Giuseppe Sergi was een Italiaanse antropoloog, vooral bekend om zijn verzet tegen het nordisme en zijn werken over de raciale identiteit van de mediterrane volkeren. Hij verwierp de heersende raciale typologieën die mediterrane volkeren labelden als "donkere blanken", aangezien deze een nordistische opvatting impliceerden van hun afstamming van blanken die raciaal vermengd waren met niet-blanken, wat hij als onjuist bestempelde. Sergi definieerde de mediterrane ras als een autonoom bruin ras, en stelde dat het noordse ras afstamde van het mediterrane ras, wiens huid na de verhuizing naar het noorden gedepigmenteerd was tot een bleke teint. Dit concept werd belangrijk in de modellering van raciale verschillen aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw.
