Andrew Johnson

    Andrew Johnson trad aan als president na de moord op Abraham Lincoln en diende van 1865 tot 1869 tijdens het turbulente tijdperk na de Burgeroorlog. Als Democraat, die zich kandidaat stelde op de Nationale Unie-lijst, bepleitte Johnson een snelle herintegratie van de zuidelijke staten in de Unie. Zijn aanpak bood echter weinig bescherming voor voormalige slaven, wat leidde tot een aanzienlijk conflict met het door de Republikeinen gedomineerde Congres. Deze confrontatie resulteerde uiteindelijk in zijn impeachment door het Huis van Afgevaardigden, waardoor hij de eerste Amerikaanse president werd die een dergelijke procedure onderging, hoewel hij uiteindelijk door de Senaat werd vrijgesproken.
