This catalogue includes 150 marvelous full-page color plates, plus generous selections of his etchings for Gogol's Dead Souls , lithographs, drawings and photographs. In a perceptive essay, Bessonova, the museum's curator, observes of Chagall's floating "His figures soar happily or sadly, depending on the moral condition of the world above which they hover." She compares Chagall, who spent most of his life in France, to Henri Rousseau, another artist who brought forth the images of his daydream visions. Included also are a breathlessly lyrical reminiscence by poet Voznesensky and a foreword by museum director Antonova. This extraordinary tribute offers a fresh look at Chagall's many-sided career as moonstruck visionary, cubist-inspired ethnographer, chronicler of war and masterful caricaturist.

Inspired by a journey through Greece, Marc Chagall, one of the twentieth-century’s most popular painters, created a wonderful series of lithographs that brought to life this ancient Greek love story. The story of Daphnis and Chloe, a pastoral romance attributed to the Greek poet Longus, follows the adventures of two foundling children raised by adopted parents who are humble shepherds in the idyllic setting of the Isle of Lesbos. As Daphnis and Chloe grow to be young adults tending their adopted parents’ sheep and goats on the sun-drenched Grecian hillsides and pastures, they discover that their friendship is turning to love but in their innocence they do not know how to proceed. Together they experience many trials and tribulations before finally realizing their true fate. Daphnis and Chloe has served through the ages as an inspiration for nearly every love story that has followed including Romeo and Juliet.
Marc Chagall's magnificent stained-glass windows installed in the synagogue of the Hadassah-Hebrew Medical Center in Jerusalem are no doubt among the most inspiring and beautiful pieces of twentieth-century art."

Chagall was the son of a herring merchant, born in Witebsk in White Russia, opposite a laundress and a chimney sweep. After the Revolution, while waiting for emigration papers, he wrote his autobiography at the age of 34. My Life reads like one of Chagall's paintings- emotional, fragmentary, humorous, colourful and dream-like, soaked in nostalgia for Jewish small-town society, familiar from 'The Fiddler on the Roof'. It combines a colourist's eye for detail, an artist's passion for life, a satirical sense of humour and a backdrop of Belle poque Paris and revolutionary Russia. The character sketches are magnificent. Chagall produced 50 illustrations, which accompany the text. The first English translation of My Life was published in 1965 and it has been in print ever since.
