Een hoogbejaarde Engelse auteur vertelt haar levensverhaal aan de dochter van een boekhandelaar die haar biografie moet publiceren. Zij onthult diverse bizarre, lugubere details, waarin spookverschijningen en vreemde kleurrijke personages een rol spelen. Ten slotte geeft zij een gruwelijk geheim indirect en langzaam prijs, wat haar biografe heftig beroert. Een debuutroman met aardige, soms wat gechargeerde vondsten, boeiend en meeslepend geschreven met een vleugje 'black humor', maar dat niet op het niveau staat van Du Maurier en Bronte aan wie de auteur een eresaluut wil brengen. De verhalen vormen in feite samen een sprookjesboek met spookachtige effecten. Onwerkelijk, niet realistisch, vol bizarre personages, eigenlijk komt er geen doorsnee mens in voor. Toch spreken die figuren de lezer wel aan. Het in zich droevige, soms enge verhaal heeft onverwacht toch nog en soort happy end voor een enkele hoofdfiguur en dat doet deugd.

Het is negen jaar na het einde van de tweede wereldoorlog als op San Piedro, een eiland van enorme schoonheid, het dode lichaam van de schipper Carl Heine in de netten van zijn eigen vissersboot wordt aangetroffen. Verdenkingen worden als gauw beschuldigingen en men wijst een dader aan: een Japans Amerikaanse visser moet terechtstaan op de beschuldiging van een laffe, koelbloedige moord.
