Een groep ouderejaars studenten filosofie heeft zich ingeschreven voor een college Logica en Argumentatieleer. Bij het eerste college worden ze verrast door de onorthodoxe wijze van lesgeven van professor Williams. Hij heeft één opdracht voor ze. Aan de hand van tips en hun eigen logica moeten ze een fictieve zaak van een vermist meisje oplossen. Wanneer dit niet lukt binnen de zes weken die de cursus duurt, zal het meisje vermoord worden. Drie van de studenten, Mary, Brian en Dennis, raken steeds meer geobsedeerd door het raadsel. Zeker als blijkt dat de zaak gebaseerd is op een vermissing van jaren terug. Ze vermoeden dat Williams iets voor ze achterhoudt en weten niet meer wie of wat ze moeten vertrouwen.
